Rob Nelson is the Director of Human Resources at Sandia National Laboratories, with principal sites in Albuquerque, NM and Livermore, CA, is managed by National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration. At Sandia, he served as a principal member of technical staff (PMTS) before moving to management in 2009. Rob previously served as the director of Sandia’s Health, Benefits, and Employee Services organization with responsibility for the laboratories' on-site ambulatory healthcare clinic. Today, in addition to operational and strategic work in human resources, Rob has direct responsibility for the $175 million health and welfare benefits program, talent acquisition, the shared services function, compensation, time away from work programming, pension and 401(k) retirement benefits administration for Sandia’s approximately 14,500 employees. As a member of the HR leadership team, Rob helps create and execute Sandia’s human capital strategy and works to advance Sandia’s HR capability and promote service excellence. Prior to coming to Sandia in 2005, Rob was the Vice President / CIO for Talbot Financial Corporation, a $2B (premium volume) insurance and financial services unit of Safeco Insurance. At Talbot, Rob was responsible for strategic, systems, and operational efforts including SOX 404 compliance activities and the successful integration of employees across 45 mergers and acquisitions. In addition to an MBA from the University of Denver, Rob earned a MSE in Computational Engineering from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from the University of New Mexico. Rob maintains several industry certifications including designation as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and certification from Cornell University in collective bargaining and labor relations. Rob is a 2015 graduate of Leadership New Mexico, volunteers on the New Mexico Museum of Natural History Foundation board, and is married to Bobbi Kay, a Certified Public Accountant. They have one adult son, Mark, and a German Shepherd Husky named Midnight. The entire family enjoys spending time together —especially outdoors.
