Speaker Bio
Dedicating the last 27 years with a reputation for delivering superior patient care, a deep understanding of the cultural and operational knowledge of the Palo Alto Foundation Medical Group and a desire to continuously take on new challenges to grow the business and to enhance the wellbeing of his colleagues, Kurt Vandevort has repeatedly demonstrated his commitment to making the organization the best place to work with an outlook on sustainable and innovative strategic growth.
In 2016 PAFMG was undergoing a transition period and restructuring of its operational leadership. After attending Sutter Leadership Academy, Kurt continued play an active role in the organizational changes. He aggressively advocated for a structure emphasizing a true matrix of both service lines across the Bay Area geographies and smaller regional leadership teams that would complement the cross-regional teams to unify the group while maintaining and supporting the benefits of regional variation in culture and business needs. At the same time he spread best practices from each region to re-enforce the need for cross-regional collaboration, teamwork and consistency in operations models. He took on the role as Interregional Medical Director and developed a team of 15 leaders with regional responsibilities. The team focused on sharing ideas and distributing critical content to the physicians and APCs during monthly group meetings, as well as establishing monthly leadership meetings to cascade information, to socialize ideas and to provide education on leadership development. This work resulted in enhanced communication with markedly improved engagement in the AMGA survey and in other group wide activities and events designed to reinforce a culture of wellbeing while seeking to make a large group feel smaller and more personal.
Prior to his role as Interregional Medical Director, Kurt served in a myriad of roles throughout PAFMG which have given him a deep understanding of the business. He has served as a member of the Camino Regional Finance Committee and Retirement Committees, PAFMG Nominating Committee as well as longer tenures on the PAFMG Compensation Committee where he served as Vice Chair and a key thought leader. He has worked on the Physician Services Agreement negotiating team since 2012 and helped to develop key PSA incentive metrics and has served as primary negotiator of the contract. He continues to care for patients as an Internal Medicine physician in Sunnyvale where he has previously served as a Site Leader and a Camino Regional Division Head of Primary Care. Kurt pioneered new workflows using Lean operating systems around standard office work for staff and physicians, scheduling and FTE assignment, tracking demand and access, and incorporating Advanced Practice Clinicians into Primary Care Practices. In 2020 Kurt assumed the role of CEO of the Palo Alto Foundation Medical Group with over 1900 physicians and APCs serving over 1 million patients in the bay area.
Kurt has a B.A. in Neurobiology from Cornell University and a M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his internship and residency at Georgetown University Medical Center.
He lives in Saratoga with his wife Rebecca where they spend time with their 2 amazing children and dog Annie. When not working on his Epic inbasket or Outlook inbox Kurt enjoys watching his children participate in school activities, golf, jazz music, NFL football and skiing.
